Oh Canada....

After Zoe aced her exams and Evelyn turned a few rookie skiers into pros giving lessons at White Pine Touring, we hopped in the car for the 13.5 hour trek over the edge of the border to Rossland, BC for a weekend of NorAm racing. Long drive, but now we know the words to ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ by heart, so it was good for something! Don’t ask us for a rendition, we’re going to break it out at the next karaoke night…

Women's 10km skate podium
The first day was a skate sprint on a sweet course with good ups, fun downs and sharp curves, a little bit of everything. Both Zoe and Evelyn were unfortunately eliminated in hard fought quarterfinals. To put it in Evelyn’s words, “I was a loser, but I wasn’t lucky…” The next day was a 10k mass start skate that made for exciting racing. It came down to a sprint showdown in which Evelyn nabbed 4th. Zoe ended up 12th.

All in all, a solid weekend of racing. Thanks to Black Jack Ski Club for putting on some good races! Zoe and Evelyn are both in Bend for Christmas, Zoe to hang out with her family and Evelyn to visit her old stomping grounds.

Where is Stella?!

These days StellaRacing is spread around North America. Zoe and Evelyn have been rippin it up on the NorAm circuit in Rossland, BC and Morgan and Katie have been holding down the fort in Utah. So here's a brief update...

Rossland- Zoe and Evelyn demonstrated their strength in the distance events with Evelyn taking 4th after duking it out in the lead pack (minus Diggins who crushed everyone). Full results here.

Wasatch Citizen Series - Saturday was the first WSC race ofthe year at Soldier Hollow. We raced on a short man made loop with 150+ people!!! It was so fun to see people of all ages and abilities come out for the 10k classic. Morgan finished second behind Rosie Brennan of APU. The best part was getting to duke it out with the boys... results here.

White Pine Touring Local's Day - Sunday was WPT Local's Day AND our StellaRacing suits arrived just in time to make a debut at the Ski With Stella clinic. Katie and I were psyched to see such a huge turn out!!! We kicked the lesson off with some tag and then broke into groups for technique and tips. Next year we might have to have a fun Stella relay at the end... pair up novice skiers with experienced? what do you think?!

There is a little break in the action for the holidays but check back soon for pics and updates! Oh yeah, and do a snow dance ;)

Bozangeles

StellaRacing made a quick trip up to the Bozeman Supertours this past weekend, driving up Friday and back on Sunday after the races. I was down with a  cold this week and Zoe ended up catching a cold as well so we weren't quite 100% for the races.
The folks at Bohart ranch managed to pull together some great races despite having a shortage of snow. Although, I now have a pair of skis that are ready to test out a new grind from White Pine...
Photo blatantly stolen from fasterskier
I pulled off a 9th in the sprint prologue, 8th in the 5km skate and 9th in the 10km classic. Zoe had a decent sprint (10th) and a a 14th in the 5km skate before she smartly decided to not race on Sunday and risk getting more sick.
Despite the brief trip, we fit in a business meeting with our new sponsor, Sauce Hats. Thanks Shayla! We also got a tour of the world headquarters of this lovely headwear company and saw some new product designs. Pretty exciting stuff. (I'm rocking a Sauce hat in the pic) Our team edition hats and new race suits from Podiumwear will be making their debut in Rossland.
Between racing and sponsor meetings we also fit in a not so tightly contested cribbage match (I almost got skunked), a round of snow bocce (Zoe got DESTROYED), and flew our remote controlled helicopters.
Good thing we've got a couple weeks to recover and get a bit of training in before the Rossland NorAm.

West in Pics (and words, updated)

Update from Donger:
StellaRacing's first race trip is in the books. DUN! We're back recuperating in the land of Zion, and by recuperating I mean that Zoe is back at school full time and Morgan and myself are alternating days teaching skiing at White Pine Nordic Center and barista-ing at Park City Coffee Roasters. Here's a brief recap of our trip to Jellystone:

New team jackets, hats and tights! Thanks to Shayla from Sauce Hats and Reid from Podium Wear.
Team Lime Green and jolly rogers.
10 km skate. Ouch.

Thanks to Ian Harvey from Toko for all the great pics!!!!

First ski (sort of)

Yes, this happened
I realize folks in CO are already skiing on groomed trails, Bendites have been kicking around on NW mashed potatoes, even Vermonters beat us to the first day on skis. And of course, Alaskans have been skiing on perfect tracks since I don't know when but they don't count my mini early snow poll. Anyhow, the past few days have given us a whopping 1 1/2 inches of dry Utah fluff here in town so finally we've been able to get out and scratch around on rock skis.
I did a recon run in the morning and deemed the snow ski-worthy at the mid mountain level. By that, I mean ankle deep over Wasatch boulders. Morgan and I threw our rockiest rock skis in the car, parked at THE Montage, globbed on some layers of Toko blue and up we went. My initial thought was to make our way over to some dirt service roads that would have been mellow and stridable. But somehow we talked ourselves into thinking skiing straight up some mtb trails to the top of the pass was a good idea...we weren't thinking about the route down yet.
This shot isn't staged...

Some of the switchbacks were a little rough in the xc gear, and hopping downed trees was less than pretty but we made it to the top of Guardsman. Skiing back down the narrow trail seemed like a poor choice, as did picking a line down Daly Chutes. Spying a dirt road that skirted down the other side of the bowl, we decided to pick our way over there.
Somewhere above the rim of McConkey's. glorious
After a windy, windblown, ridgeline traverse, we did some of the ugliest skiing I'v ever seen off the ridge. Occasional 'powder stashes' gave us enough false confidence to build up speed and eat it when we'd hit the thin sections. Morgan did an excellent snowplow into lawn dart imitation and I had my fair share of awkward faceplants as well. Anyhow, we made it back to the car with no broken equipment or bones and more laughs than I've had in a workout in a long time. And yes, we skied in our puffies the whole time. It was cold.
